Red cheeks do not always mean that you are embarrassed or shy. Sometimes the redness of the mid face is accompanied by red bumps and these are telltale signs of rosacea. Dr. Keith Llewellyn offers rosacea treatment for residents of Santa Barbara, Ventura, Solvang, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez, and the surrounding areas of California.
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic, recurrent condition that appears as persistent redness in the mid face area and may be associated with flushing, tiny blood vessels and capillaries, acne like red bumps and pustules. Sometimes in men, it may be associated with thickening of the skin on the nose and enlargement of the distal nose (rhinophyma). Rosacea occurs most often in women ages 30 to 50 years old, but may have its onset at other ages and frequently occurs in men as well. Patients with rosacea often note that their skin is sensitive to skin care products and their flushing and redness is triggered by hot baths or showers, exercise, heat, cold, alcohol, spicy foods, and/or sun exposure. Rosacea may also affect the eyes causing blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and recurrent chalazions. It may affect vision in some cases. Patients sometimes note itchy, burning, stinging sensations in their eyes.
There are several types of rosacea. Dr. Llewellyn can distinguish between the specific types of rosacea and recommend the best treatment approach for you. While the cause of rosacea is unknown and their is no cure available for rosacea, several treatments are available to help you control rosacea and improve your symptoms.
