Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment in Santa Barbara, CA

Do you have a crusty red lesion on your skin that does not heal? You may have squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type of skin cancer. Dr. Keith Llewellyn offers treatment for squamous cell carcinoma for men and women in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Solvang, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez and surrounding areas of California.

What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer, with basal cell carcinoma accounting for most cases of skin cancer. A non-healing sore, a scaly, red lesion or a new firm red “bug bite” that does not go away on your skin may indicate that you have a squamous cell carcinoma and should be evaluated by Dr. Llewellyn. Squamous cell carcinoma can have many clinical appearances.  Some signs of squamous cell carcinoma are:

  • Red, scaly patch that may or may not bleed at times
  • Growth, usually red,  that is elevated on the skin or an ulceration that bleeds and may grow in size very quickly
  • Persistent sore that is crusty or bleeding
  • A growth that looks similar to a wart, but that bleeds and crusts without healing

There are different types of squamous cell carcinoma.  While usually a localized problem, squamous cell carcinoma has the potential to spread and be deadly.   Dr. Llewellyn can determine exactly what type you have and recommend treatments.

How Much Does Treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cost?

The cost of your treatment for squamous cell carcinoma depends on several factors, such as the severity of the lesion, location and technique used for treatment. After you work with Dr. Llewellyn to develop a plan, we can provide an estimated cost.  Aloe Dermatology accepts payment by cash and major credit cards, and you can learn more on our financing page.

What Are the Benefits of Treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous cell carcinoma has the potential to be more aggressive than basal cell carcinoma, so we recommend that you be treated by Dr. Llewellyn if you find an open or crusty sore on your skin. This cancer can spread to your lymph nodes and beyond and has the potential to be deadly.

Am I a Candidate for Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment?

If you suspect that you have squamous cell carcinoma, schedule a consultation at Aloe Dermatology to be evaluated.  A skin biopsy can be performed to confirm or rule out the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Once diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, you should have the lesion treated.

What Should I Expect from Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment?

Squamous cell carcinomas are usually excised either with simple excision or for some cases Mohs surgery.  For more advanced cases, Dr Llewellyn will coordinate your care with specialists locally and sometimes with cancer centers regionally that specialize in advanced squamous cell carcinoma treatment.   Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma may include:

  • Medications that are applied to the lesion
  • Excision
  • Mohs surgery
  • Electrodessication and curretage
  • Cryosurgery
  • Laser surgery
  • Radiation
  • Photodynamic therapy

Although not as dangerous as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma is none the less a cancer that may grow locally and spread.  Aloe Dermatology offers squamous cell carcinoma treatment for men and women in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Solvang, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez, and the surrounding areas of California. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
